He was a man of good impulses and possessed a warm hearted, generous spirit, but an overmastering fondness for strong drink kept him from being the man he might have been. June 25 - Mrs M.A. Tally of Monroeville AL has been here visiting her son Rev C.S. Tally. No Date - A fire at Freeport last Thursday night destroyed the San Gala Hotel, the Freeport Drug store, Waldrop's Barber Shop, and a pool room. The cause of the fire is unknown. 6 Jan - Hon Wallace BRUCE died on 2 Jan at his home on Wright Ave. In the death of Mr Bruce the county has lost one of the greatest literary men of the age. He came to this are more than a quarter of a century ago. The funeral was held on Sunday 4 Jan in the Chautaugqua auditorium. Internment was in the city cemetery with Masonic services being conducted. Aug - No Date - Mrs Mary C. McLeod, one of the oldest settlers of Florida died last Friday at the home of her son N.A. McLeod near Red Bay. For over sixty years she has been a resident to this section coming here from Scotland and at the old age of 80 years was called to her final resting place. The funeral services were conducted at the Euchee Valley Cemetery Saturday, by her pastor Rev R.Q. Baker. She leaves to morn her loss out of eight children one son N.A. McLeod, all the other children having gone to their final reward before her. Aug - Same Paper - Mrs Woodrow Wilson died last Thursday, the wife of President Wilson. For the third time since it became the residence of the chief executive of the United States, the Angel of Death has knocked at the door of the White House and called away the wife of the President. Henderson, of Alaqua passed away Sunday and was buried Tuesday, Rev J.W. Wilson conducting the service. According to the expressed wish of the deceased a poplar tree standing on the home place was cut down, hauled to the mill, sawed into lumber and the coffin made from it, after her death. Died on Friday and was buried on Saturday at the Valley Cemetery 12 Nov - Mr M.M. Morrison, died last Friday. The funeral was held on Sat with burial at the Valley Cemetery. Mr Morrison was about 65 years of age. He is survived by his sister Kate Morrison and a brother Mr A.D. Morrison of Pensacola. The Meigs Home Burned - A fire which was discovered about two o'clock Sunday morning destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs W. F. Meigs, at the corner of Nelson avenue and 7th street. Mr and Mrs Meigs were in Mossey Head visiting relatives. The only occupants at home at the time of the fire were Mr and Mrs Claud Meigs. 31 Dec - Mr Metlock, of Nashville Tenn, who has been here on a visit to his daughter Mrs Hope Cawton. Gunn. 16 Jul - Mr Enos Infinger was buried last Sunday. He is survived by his brother Mr B.F. Infinger. 23 Jul - Mrs O.A. Watson is visiting her brother Mr C.I. Bludworth in Van Cleave MS. Born to Mr and Mrs Thomas Waldrop a boy Sunday the 19th. 13 Aug - J. W. Henderson, a white convict, escaped from the gang last Monday night. Which leads us to wonder just how long it will be before they get him back. "Cousin Ellis" White, who escaped something like a year ago, is still at large. 20 Aug - Freeport - Born to Mr and Mrs Geo Whal on Wednesday the 12th, a fine boy. Dec - Mr P.A. Buck passed away at the home of Mrs F.K. Simmons Christmas day and the body was taken to Pensacola for internment. Mr Buck was from Kansas and his wife is the daughter of Mr P.K. Yonge, of Pensacola, and he and two of his sons were here when the end came. No Date - Mrs J. H. Reddick of Noma FL died in Hill's Infirmary in Montgomery Monday of last week and her body was brought to her home for burial. The funeral was held from the family residence, Rev McGlaun conducting the services. Before her marriage she was Miss Ida Davis of Pt Washington. She was 27 years of age and is survived by her husband who is in business in Noma. No Date - Mr John C. Page, of Corry, PA who has been a winter visitor here for several years, died very suddenly of heart failure at the residence of Mrs Sue Gillis on Sunday. The child was playing in the yard around a fire when her clothes caught on fire. Mrs D. Banfill, one of the earliest settlers in DeFuniak passed away last Wednesday and her funeral was held from the Presbyterian church Thursday morning. For years she was the librarian of the Ladies Library Association. Mr and Mrs Malcolm Bruce's daughter Madeline, died Monday after an illness of a couple of weeks. The funeral was Tuesday. Mr Chas E. Jernigan passed away Sunday morning, at the home of his sister, Mrs J.F. Married last Thursday at the home of the bride's brother, Mr Amzi Wilson of Pensacola, Miss Mamie Wilson of this city to Mr Wm H. Caro of Pensacola. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Wilson, of DeFuniak, and the groom is the son of Conductor Caro, of the P&A. Mr James W. Wilson, of this city, visited his sister, Mrs Minnie Rhodes, of Baker, last Sunday, this being the first time he had seen his sister in eight years, and the second time in 24 years. 2 Apr - Capt Samuel L. Clifford, 70, died Wednesday of valvular heart trouble. The deceased had been a bar pilot at this port for 42 yrs and was one of the oldest members of the local Pilots' Association both in age and point of service. He is survived by two daughters Mrs James Creary and Mrs James Bazell of Pensacola, and three sons Sam L., H. and Sydney Clifford.TThe remains were brought from DeFuniak today and were taken to the home of the son-in-law of the deceased. 9 Apr - Mrs Harriett S. Keyser passed away yesterday afternoon, at the home of her son, W.S. Keyser, she was 97. Mrs Keyser was born at Springfield Mass March 17 1817. She was the widow of the late William Judah Keyser. Wynn When you think about it everything is a miracle 7 May - Family Re-Union - On Sunday, May 3rd, there was a joyful family reunion at the home of Mr and Mrs Henry Wilkerson, four miles from DeFuniak Springs, the occasion being the celebration of Mrs Wilkerson's 63 birthday. At the family reunion last year about 140 relatives and friends were present, including 7 children, 32 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren, a number being absent. The children meet at the old home each year to celebrate their mother's birthday. 21 May - A negro by the name of Lewis Harris better known as "Pap," was killed at the Britton Lumber Co's Camp about 3 miles from Glendale last Saturday night.TThere was a negro dance at the camp and he became involved in a difficulty with a young negro by the name of Israel Dobin, who happened to have a load of booze and a gun. Harris was shot in the head and instantly killed.TThe sheriff went up and carried the dogs but up to going to press he has been unable to trace the murderer. Mrs E. Alter and son of Pensacola, along with her sister Mrs Gilfford Garrett of Jacksonville has been here visiting their father Mr R. W. Storrs. Mrs Neil McLeod of Chipley came over Thursday night to attend the funeral of her cousin Mrs R. W. Stinson who was buried in the Red Bay cemetery Friday. Mr H. Jernigan of Portland is in town this week visiting his daughter Mrs Geo Ward. 21 May - Mrs D.F. Gunn of Freeport has been here visiting her daughter Mrs Obie Adams. 21 May - Mr Clark Infinger died Friday at his home in the Alaqua neighborhood, and was buried at the Alaqua church Saturday. Uncle Clark had reached the advanced age of 83 years and had been in poor health for some time. He is survived by a number of children. 4 Jun - The eight month old baby of Mr and Mrs John Beatty died at their home in Poley AL last Friday and was brought to DeFuniak for burial. 22 Jan - Mrs M. Banfil died Wednesday and the funeral was held Thursday. Father Hinton, who with his son and daughter-in-law, spent the winter here two years ago with Mr and Mrs George F. Carden, died Saturday at his home in Marianna at the age of 90 years. The was sent back to his old home in South Dakota. 29 Feb - Family Reunion - There was a reunion of the Hinote connection at Dorcas on the 27th of last month, the occasion being the celebration of the 81st birthday of Mrs Mariah Hinote, who has resided at Dorcas for the past 24 years. Sixty-two of her descendants were present, forty were absent, making a total of 102 now living. Sixteen have died, bringing the grand total of the descendants of this good lady up to the number of 118. Mrs Hinote is the mother of Mrs Alex McCallum of Dorcas, and was born in Georgia 61 years ago. Card of Thanks - Mrs Sarah Nowling wishes to thank the people of DeFuniak for their generosity in raising $106 for her with which to pay off a mortgage on her home. 26 Mar - Mrs Jennie McLeod died Sunday at the home of her son-in-law-law D.D. Douglas, with whom she has lived for many years. She was 81 years old. Three grandchildren survive Clyde, Jennie, and Angus Douglas. Two brothers Judge Daniel Campbell and Mr John A. Campbell, a sister Mrs C. Harrison of Milton. Having descended from the Campbells and Morrisons, prominent families of Walton county. The remains will be buried in Euchee Valley cemetery.
