    NEWSPAPERS

      The Sanford Herald

The Seminole County Public Library System has the Sanford Herald newspaper on microfilm from August 22, 1908 - August 31, 1996.

There is no index that I am aware of at this time.

    Just a note regarding newspapers:
The South Florida Journal, which began publication in 1873, is believed to be the first newspaper in Sanford. The earliest extant issue of this newspaper is September 21, 1882. The Sanford Journal began publication in the 1870s.

Other early local papers were the South Florida Argus, the Florida Christian Advocate, the Gate City Chronicle, and the Mellonville Advertiser. Unfortunately, very few or no issues of these newspapers remain.

Our thanks to Alicia Clarke, Curator of the Sanford Museum for this information.
