Tamzin E. Squire Wrote: Mary Ellen, I had a little time, so I went through the Florida room at the St. Petersburg Public Library Main Branch. Our West Florida collection is a little thin, and mainly includes books with which I'm sure you are familiar, but in hopes that we have something tasty, here goes: "Glimpses of the Panhandle," Harold W. Bell, Adams Press, Chicago 1961. This is a collection of whatever story interested the author, and as such has a bit of everything. "West Florida and its Relation to the Historical Cartography of the US," Henry E. Chambers, Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore, 1898. Heavy history. "The British Development of West Florida 1763-1769," U of CA Press Berkley and LA, 1947. Lists of grantees, town plan of Pensacola 1765-1781, Gov't appointees lists, etc. Probably the most exciting choice at this branch. "British West Florida 1763-1783," Cecil Johnson, Yale U Press/Archon Books 1971. Mostly history, light on names. "History of Jackson County," J. Randall Stanley, Jackson County Historical Society, 1950. Tons o' names. This struck me as a good resource for names as the tone of the book is "We stuck it to the Florida Establishment, so THERE!" Lists of bnkers, churches, etc. "St. Andrews, FL," George M. West, Panama City Publishing Company, 1922, reprinted 1938 & 1960. Many place names, some maps and official record of vesseld Blockading St. Andrew's Bay 1862-4. "Colonial Pensacola," edited by James R. McGovern. U of Southern Miss by Pensacola-Escambia County Development Committee. Eh, so-so. "A Description of the English Province of Carolana, by the Spaniards call'd Florida and by te French La Louisiane," Daniel Coxe, 1722 repro'd in 1976 U of F Press. Had to include this; I had not realized that one family had been granted all the land from the St. John's River to the Albermarle Sound west to the Pacific. This is apparently the book one of the family members wrote to try and sell some of the land. We also have the following publications: Bulletin of the Florida State Museum, 1957-Present Florida Anthropologist, 1951-Present Florida Historical Quarterly, 1908-Present Mind you, this was a very quick review of the books' content. As I get to other branches and library systems, I will check for other books. We have a library cooperative here in Pinellas County; each city system has its own administrator, but they all honor each other's cards and work together on PR and programming. It's really great down here; they even put all the genealogy stuff in one central library regardless of system! If I can be of any further assistance, let me know. Tamzin Elizabeth Squire | Cole's Law: Thinly sliced cabbage sfyetd8@scfn.thpl.lib.fl.us | Other Books and papers I found: "Up, Down, In & Around Boggy Bayou" BB Barrister & Jack C Nichols A slightly irreverant/irrelevent look at Boggy Bayou (Niceville) billed as "A collection of humorous short stories about some folks that live up, down, in and around Boggy Bayou." "Our Town" Northwest Florida Daily News A compilation of stories that ran as a series in the News under the same name. It has an introduction with how some towns got their names as per Henry Dobson, a retired school teacher and author of A History of Okaloosa County. "He Coon The Bob Sikes Story" Bob Sikes Autobiography of Bob Sikes. "Land Between the Rivers" Ash Jennet "Household and Family in the Postbellum South: Walton County, Florida 1870-1885" Barbara Finlay Agresti Dissertation, University of Florida, 1976 "A History of Okaloosa County" Henry Allen Dobson Thesis, Southeastern Louisiana University, 1974 "Okaloosa: A History of Okaloosa County and Parts of Her Neighboring Counties to the 1940's" Jerry M.
