John Posey filed his plat of St. Claire in 1915, the same year Frank Knox filed his plat of Myakka City, both along the route of the East & West Coast Railway between western Manatee County and Arcadia. St. Claire became the Town of Verna until it went defunct in 1929. (Verna Posey, the incorporated town’s namesake, was John Posey’s daughter.) The Verna post office was established February 4, 1916 and lasted until January 6, 1930. Thereafter, mail was handled by the Myakka City post office and it is so even today.

Verna’s population was 201 in 1930, and dropped to 105 in 1935. (For a discussion of historical events which caused the drastic decrease in population, see the Myakka City section of “Mayaca, Miakka, Myakka: Distinguished Florida Names.”) In 1945, Verna’s population was 97.
