Myakka City, Manatee County, 1935
Total Population: 297 (287 white, 10 black)
Note: Myakka City was the platted product of a northern land developer in
1915 and the same year, the railroad passed through Myakka City to
accommodate the lumber and naval stores industries and the burgeoning
agriculture industry. People came from other places to seek jobs and to buy
land. In 1920, the population of five-year-old Myakka City was 414 and
nearly all were newcomers. The state’s economy faltered in 1925 and 1926
and many Floridians were left destitute. Tourism and real estate
temporarily recovered in 1927 and 1928, then bottomed out when the stock
market crashed in 1929. In Myakka City, when the railroad was finished
hauling the fruits of the pine woods, virgin forests were no more and the
region was indelibly changed. By 1933, the railroad tracks in Myakka City
had been dismantled. Myakka City’s population decreased from 451 in 1930 to
297 in 1935.
