The Gillette Cemetery
The Gillette Cemetery is believed to have begun circa early 1850s and was known as the Gillett family graveyard. Daniel Gillett, who came with his family to this area circa 1848, shared the burial ground with his neighbors. August 14, 1876, Daniel and wife Molcy gave title to property which included the graveyard, to Charles Wesley Gillett, their son. June 10, 1893 Charles Wesley Gillett and wife. Mary Ann Farabee Gillett filed and recorded an indenture which transferred title of the cemetery property to three trustees and provided for the appointment of their successors. Trustees took title to the cemetery and were to hold the land as a family burying ground forever. Additional land gifts were made during the ensuing years by F.C. and E. Virginia Armstrong, James Lamar and Rosemary Richards, and Roger H. and Katherine Hale. October 3, 1981, the cemetery ownership changed to a nonprofit corporation with the Trustees, serving as the first officers of the corporation.
