Created by an act of the Florida Legislature in 1887 from Monroe County; Lee County
was named after Robert E. Lee, general of the Army of the Confederate States of America.
Ft. Myers, the county seat, was established in 1850 as a fort for defense of the
raiding Indians who occupied the area. It was named for the son-in-law of the founder
of Fort Brooke in Tampa, Col Abraham C. Myers, who was stationed there for seven years.

many part-time residents return to Lee County from the "great white north"enjoy
a "season in the sun".
