History of the Lafayette County Courthouse HISTORY OF MAYO/LAFAYETTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE
From 1893-1894, the first Mayo courthouse was built. This building,
known taoday as the McClain or Ware Apartments, was built by a Jacksonville
firm at a cost of $5,800. In 1907, plans went underway for the building
of a new courthouse. The E.C. Hoisford Company of Atlanta, Georgia, submitted
the plans for the present courthouse. It was to be fireproof and built
of Indiana limestone with a maximum cost of $47,000. The construction contract
was awarded to the Mutual Construction Company of Louisville, Kentucky
for a bid of $46,950. The construction contract was awarded on February
7, 1908. In March of the same year, the old courthouse was sold for $615
to a Mr. Raleigh Lancaster on the stipulation that it continue to be used
as a courthouse until the completion of the new building, which was in
November, 1909. The building was lifted off of the courthouse block and
moved to its present site today on the southeast corner of Fletcher and
Bloxham Streets.
