Formation of Jefferson County:

Jefferson county, named for Thomas Jefferson, was established January 6, 1827. Until that time, Jefferson was part of Leon County and also included what is now Madison, Taylor, Lafayette and Dixie Counties.  Later that same year these counties were broken off into Madison County. Monticello, named for Jefferson's Virginia home, was named county, seat before statehood while Florida was a territory of the  United States.  Today, Monticello remains the county's only incorporated city.  Monticello is also known for it's ante-bellum and Victorian architecture, giant live oaks forming canopy roads, spring dogwoods  and summer crape myrtles.  Jefferson County is known as the Keystone County, the only Florida County that reaches from Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico.
