-The Southeast Volusia Historical Society was founded in 1982.
-We currently have a membership of 361, which includes single, family, students,
and lifetime.
-The SVHS publishes a monthly newsletter, "The Mosquito News" which
features current activities, stories, and old pictures of our area.
-The SVHS owns and operates the New Smyrna Museum of History, located at 120
Sams Ave. in downtown New Smyrna Beach. Originally a U.S. Post Office,
the building was renovated and just designated a local landmark. The Museum has
a large pictorial gallery of local history dating to the late 19th Century; a
railroad exhibit which has 3 running trains and is a replica of the old New
Smyrna yards of the early 20th Century; an Archeology Lab plus the Museum
is the repository for archeological samples for the County of Volusia.
There are revolving exhibits every 3 months and the permanent exhibits are being
developed in a chronological story of our history to include a centerpiece
exhibit featuring the Turnbull Settlement of 1768, the largest attempt by
England at colonization in the America's. The second floor has an art gallery; a
meeting room for local organizations; the Zelia Sweett Collections room and the
Sheldon Research Library( open by appointment).
