Because of Spanish Land Grants issued in Escambia County long before the township/range system was in use, it was not possible to make the township system match perfectly with those earlier land grants. For that reason Escambia County's grid system varies from the township grid pattern in some areas. Map 2 shows a transparent overlay of the actual grid as it stands today. On the overlay map you can see those areas that were carried over from the original land grants.
